Every date on the calendar traces back to land-grant university turfgrass programs, the extension services that actually run the trials. Nothing here is invented, and where the research varies by region the calendar says so.
Soil temperature, not calendar dates
Crabgrass germinates near 55°F at two inches down. A fixed date fails in a warm spring, so the calendar gives you the trigger rather than a guess.
Counted from your frost date
The nitrogen cutoff is six weeks before first frost, and the renovation window is about 45 days before it. Look the date up once and the rest follows.
